"We love coming here because your society is based fundamentally on respect"
Enter Shikari are Rou, Rory, Rob and Chris. They're from St. Albans in the UK. They don't like crabs or squat toilets... but they do like Japan, and Japan really likes them!
Modern Fuss hooked up with the guys midway through their latest Japan tour to find out whats been going on...
1- Welcome to Japan! Please tell your Japanese fans something they don't already know about you!
Well, I have a strange fear of crabs, never trust anything that walks sideways.
2- So you've just been touring Australia, how was it? Any stories?
It was fantastic. It was in the middle of their summer over there so it was a real pleasant change from the snow we were experiencing back home. Beaches, festivals with great bands, good night life... what's not to like? Well over there we get appointed an Aussie tour manager to help us out and to be our go to guy at the festival. One night rob our drummer had been drinking and often tends to sleepwalk... he managed to lock himself out of his room, knock on the tour managers room and just went and got into his bed. He got quite a fright when we woke up face to face in bed with a large aussie dude in the morning!
3- Aside from your shows here, what else do you have planned?
Um it's annoying, we don't quite get as much time here as we'd like. I guess the normal really, just to get out and see the cities we're playing in, just take in the culture. We love coming here because your society is based fundamentally on respect. It's always obvious to us when we visit that the rest of the world should take a leaf out of your book on this one!
4- Are you into any Japanese music? What do you think of the scene here?
Oh yeah, we love Maximum the Hormone... they are friends of ours since we first played shows together, we were dancing our asses off to them in Rock Rock, in Osaka last night. We also blast on a fair bit of Mong Hang. Those dudes write some crazy crazy music. We love it.
5- After Japan, you're off to North America for a massive tour! Looking forward to it? What's it like doing such tours?
Yeh it's gonna be one hell of a trek that tour. We never really enjoy touring the States and this is the first time we've been really looking forward to going. It's a great bill with a lot of awesome bands! We're gonna be playing to large audiences which is great for us, it's hard sometimes travelling so far and only playing to a few people. We're just happy to get out to most of the cities on this tour. It's taken us a long time to get to some of these places... like Florida for example.
6- What can we expect from your next album? And when can we expect it?
Well we're not exactly sure right now. We aim to start writing it around November time this year, after all our touring has finished. By that time who knows what we'll be listening to and taking influence from! I can assure you though that we'll always be pushing our boundaries and trying to create exciting, uplifting and original music.
Quickfire.
Describe where you are now?
I'm in the dressing room of the venue in Nagoya. It's quite a bland looking room with a horrible light yellow wall paper. It's been tainted with lots of dirty hand marks which have kind of changed the colour to a muddy yellow.
What is the last song you listened to together?
Regina spektor - Eet
What do you love about Japan?
The respect people have for eachother.
What do you 'dislike' about Japan?
Well there's very little we dislike about japan, but i guess we're not too keen on the hole in the floor toilets.
Please recommend a new or up-and-coming band/artist.
The King Blues... I think some poeple will know them over here though, they're playing at Punkspring festival this year, so please make sure you head over to watch them and make them feel welcome. (Check out The King Blues here)
Finally, what do you never leave the house without?
I rarely leave the house without any clothes on.
Thanks a lot guys... and Sayonara on behalf of all of your fans here in Japan! Enjoy the American tour!
